How to Prepare Witchetty Grubs

The name "witchetty grub" is given to several different species of moth larva, such as the cossid moth, that inhabit regions of Australia. The grub gets its name because it is found living in the roots of the witchetty bush. Commonly referenced as a survival food, the witchetty grub is eaten raw or cooked. Cooking the grub can help make it more palatable.

Instructions

    • 1

Gather witchetty grubs from the bark and trunks of witchetty trees. Carefully pull the grubs from the holes in which they live.

    • 2

Build a fire, and allow the wood to reduce and form hot coals. Gather a small pile of hot coals to the side of the main burning fire.

    • 3

Place the witchetty grubs on the hot coals, and monitor closely. Turn the grubs periodically so they will toast evenly.

    • 4

Remove the grubs carefully from the hot coals, and allow to cool to the point where they can be handled and consumed.

    • 5

Wipe ash from the grubs or peel the outer roasted layer from the grubs before consuming. Hold the grub by the head, and bite the body from the grub just below the head. Enjoy the sweet egg-like taste of the roasted witchetty grub.
