How to Fly the Hi-Max Model 1700R Ultralight Airplane

The Hi-Max 1700R Ultralight is a miniature version of a bush taildragger aircraft. This small aircraft falls under the FAA Ultralight category and is governed by the rules for the classification. The Hi-Max is considered a three-axis ultralight --referring to the yaw, roll and climb controls of the craft. Flying a Hi-Max requires training in aerodynamics, gauges and controls and principles of flight. Ultralight flying is inherently dangerous and requires dedicated training.

Instructions

    • 1

Enroll in a flight school offering training in a stick controlled tail-dragger-style aircraft. Comprehensive listings for flight schools are found at the Aircraft Owners Pilots Association (AOPA) website (see Resources). Locate schools near you and read the menu to see if they offer tail-dragger training.

Attend the flight school to get a Sport or Recreational Pilot license sign-off from a Certified Flight Instructor. This allows you to test with an FAA test ride check-off agent. Take your check-off ride, pass, and receive your sport or recreational pilot certificate.

    • 3

Purchase a Hi-Max or join Ultralight clubs with access to the Hi-Max aircraft and sign up for rental time. Purchase your own helmet, headset and logbook. Present your license to the club along with the rental or club membership fee. Find clubs through the Ultralight and Light Sport Aircraft Association website.

Fly a check-off flight with a certified Hi-Max pilot to familiarize yourself with the controls. After the check-off flight, schedule solo flights according to the club's policies.
