How Old Do You Have to Be to Parasail?
-
Who
-
Parasailing is safe for all ages. Radical Sports Tobago, which offers parasailing tours in the Caribbean, says it's had passengers from ages 3 to 81. Grandpa and grandchild can share in the experience together. There is no age requirement, but it is advised that children under 10 ride with a parent. As long as the passenger meets a weight requirement, which can vary with the intensity of the winds, age is not a concern. If a child does not meet the weight requirement, she can fly with a parent or another passenger. Parasailing can be done in groups of up to three people. And if flying through the air doesn't excite you, most boats can take non-flying observing passengers along for the ride.
What
-
Parasailing involves being pulled by a motorboat via rope attached to a parachute, with the passenger harnessed to the parachute. After being strapped in, the passenger stands at the back end of the motorboat on the flight deck and the boat takes off. The parachute catches the air and the rope is slowly let out as the passenger takes off into the sky, oftentimes upward of 600 feet.
When and Where
-
Parasailing is a common activity at oceanside resorts throughout the world. It is especially impressive when the ocean is crystal clear, allowing the passenger to experience a view of ocean life like never before.
Why
-
Parasailing is a breathtaking experience and should not be missed. You may see turtles and dolphins in the sea below, a view of mountains or endless ocean or far-off cities from the sky above. It is an extremely safe and controlled activity, so there is no need to be afraid. If you're feeling adventurous, the tour guides can lower the parachute so much so that your feet touch the cool ocean water before propelling you back up into the sky.
Things to Remember
-
Wear a bathing suit. While most places have the ability to ensure a dry ride, the possibility of getting wet is always present.
Empty your pockets and don't bring valuables with you in the air. As tempting as it is to take your camera, the risk of dropping it is too great.
Wear sunscreen. It's only a 10- or 15-minute ride, but the direct sunlight can leave you pretty burnt.
