How to Keep a Stiff Wrist in Ping Pong

In the world of table tennis, a stiff wrist is often the difference between a missed point and victory. Learning to properly manage your wrists while flicking the ball across the table is a critical component of competitive table tennis play, though it can take some practice before it feels comfortable and natural. If you are having difficulty with your shots, and have less control than you want, keeping your wrists flexed during your matches may improve your game.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the ping-pong paddle in your dominant hand. The top of the handle should fit into the area between your index finger and thumb.

    • 2

Extend your arm to the side with the paddle facing forward. Look at your arm to see how your wrist is positioned.

    • 3

Pretend your wrist is in a brace and cannot be moved. Practice moving your arm and elbow without moving your wrist.

    • 4

Ask a friend to toss you a few ping-pong balls while you work on returning them with a very stiff wrist. Adjust your swing to accommodate the way the paddle makes contact with the ball.

Practice returning shots with your wrist stiffened at different degrees. Use your wrist for flick and spin shots, but it should never go limp or move without intent.
