Arrows for Archery Games

There are many things to consider when choosing the type of arrow to use for archery games. Are the archers primarily beginners or do they have a considerable degree of previous archery experience? You will not want to spend excess money on arrows that are likely to be lost, broken or never used again. You will also need to know which arrowheads are suitable for the activity, as different arrowheads have different purposes.

  1. Wood

    • Traditionally, wood has been used to make arrow shafts. Today, wood is still used, though less commonly than in previous centuries. The reason for this is that, although wood provides a good weight for arrow shafts, they tend to be lacking in flexibility, which often results in slightly inaccurate shots. The only archery game that is properly performed with wood arrow shafts is longbow competitions, as the aim is to shoot far rather than accurately.

    Aluminum

    • Aluminum arrow shafts are reliable, durable and expensive. These types of arrows provide flexibility and a consistency that allows an accurate shot. Aluminum arrow shafts are hollow, which is their secret to flexibility, accuracy and lightness. These types of arrows are suitable for both tournaments and hunting. They are not suitable for beginners, as they are expensive.

    Fiberglass

    • Fiberglass arrows provide flexibility and accuracy because o the lightness and flexibility of the material. They are suitable for all types of archery games and tournaments. Fiberglass arrows tend to break, however, and need to be replaced frequently.

    Carbon

    • Carbon arrows consist of an inner aluminum core and an outer carbon shell. This composite construction provides an accurate and resilient arrow. Carbon arrows are the most expensive on the market, but they are also the most reliable. Though they may not be suitable for beginners, they are good for any type of archery game and competition, as they provide the most consistent accuracy and durability.

    Arrowheads

    • Different arrowheads serve different purposes. Field-point, target-point, bullet-point and blunt-point arrows all have slightly rounded arrowhead tips that are used primarily for target practice. If you are merely practicing or holding a shooting competition, use these, as they will not penetrate trees or other objects too deeply, making it difficult to retrieve them. Fish-point, mechanical-point and broadbend-point arrowheads are barbed and used for hunting or fighting. These arrowheads should not be used for games or simple archery competitions, as they are difficult to remove from the target.
