How to Change a Mongoose Scooter's Chain

Mongoose scooters are available in either motorized or non-motorized styles. The motorized versions use a small chain to connect the engine to the rear wheels, allowing the power-transfer needed for the forward movement on the scooter. When the chain is sagging and is unresponsive, change the chain to get the ride back to normal operating procedures.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the motor off on the Mongoose scooter. Flip the scooter upside down or on its side to gain access to the chain.

    • 2

Slide the chain tool over a link on the chain. Align the chain tool's pin-pusher over the link pin and then turn the handle clockwise to push the chain pin out of the link, opening the old chain on the scooter.

    • 3

      Pull off the old chain.

    • 4

Thread the replacement chain over the area and cogs (gears) where the old chain comes from. Align the two end-links on the chain and slide a new link pin into the hole on the connection point of the two end-links.

    • 5

Slide the chain tool over the link-pin and turn the handle clockwise to push it down and into the link, closing the chain around the drivetrain on the scooter. Tug on the newly connected link to loosen the connection. Lubricate the chain by adding a drop of lube to each link along the chain.
