How to Paint a Pro-Tec Helmet

Pro-Tec helmets are frequently seen in river rafting, whitewater kayaking, BMX and mountain biking and skateboarding. These helmets meet American National Standards Institute (ANSI) guidelines and provide a safe dome to protect your cranium. Pro-Tec helmet shells are made from a pre-colored ballistic plastic. This type of plastic can hold acrylic enamel paints, whether sprayed or brushed on. Paint or stencil a custom design onto your Pro-Tec setup using acrylic paints.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw out your design on the helmet using a water-soluble marker. Mark the colors to use as you draw the design. If you use stencils, press them to the helmet and tape them on with painter's tape.

    • 2

Spread newspapers out on your workbench, and place your paints, brushes and rags within easy reach of the helmet. Dip the brushes into the acrylic enamel paints, and paint out your design. Wipe off any mistakes quickly with a rag. If spray painting stencils, wrap the parts of the helmet on which you do not want paint with tape and newspapers, and spray the stencils.

    • 3

Place the helmet on a dry sheet of newspaper to dry. Peel off the stencils and tape to expose the stenciled paint job once it dries.

    • 4

Wipe off the water-soluble marker lines.
