How to Wear a Type V Life Jacket

A Type V life jacket, or personal flotation device (PFD), is considered a special-use vest, as each is designed for a specific activity. Type V PFDs can be made specifically for kayaking, water skiing, wind surfing, and certain deck or close-water-proximity duties. In order for a life jacket to perform at an optimal level and save a person from drowning it must be worn properly. Note that though basically universal, all models of Type V life jackets will vary slightly in the way they are secured to the body.

Instructions

    • 1

Loosen all straps on the PFD. Put your arms into the sleeve holes and zip the PFD up or buckle the front straps.

    • 2

Tighten the front straps, beginning with the waist and working up to the shoulders. Ensure that the straps are tight but not constrictive to the point that it's hard to breath.

    • 3

Tighten any support straps that the PFD might have. These are typically found near the back waistline or the shoulder blade region.

    • 4

Zip or button any pockets that may be open. Have a buddy pull up on the PFD. If the neckline rises above your nose then the vest may be too loose or too big.
