What to Look for in Purchasing Rubber Water Rafts

Inflatable rafts are increasing in popularity as whitewater rafting and floating down rivers and lakes becomes a sporting hobby for many people in the summer months. Whether you want a high-quality inflatable raft or discount model for floating leisurely, there are several things you must consider before making your purchase. Rafts come in all shapes and sizes, and there are various makes and models for all household budgets.
  1. Water Use

    • You must decide what type of rafting you wish to do before you purchase an inflatable raft. Do you want to run the rapids, take part in whitewater rafting, or do you need a raft for floating down the river in calm waters on a lazy summer day? Once you have decided what type of rafting you will be doing, you can decide whether you need a high-quality raft that can withstand choppy, rough waters or a raft that is suited for easy floating in calm waters.

    Whitewater Rafting

    • Inflatable rafts suited for whitewater rafting can be purchased at most sporting goods stores. There are two different models of rafts: fully inflatable styles or the rigid inflatable style. The fully inflatable style is suited for riding the rapids and can withstand rough river rafting expeditions. You may also purchase these rafts at discount stores, but you will want to find a raft that will last for more than a couple seasons, and will not fall apart after a few uses. It is recommended you purchase a high-quality raft for whitewater rafting from a sporting goods store.

    Calm Float Raft

    • If you decide you want an inflatable raft for lazy floats down the river, you may check out the inflatable models sold in the sporting goods sections of most discount stores. These rafts are much less expensive than rafts purchased at a sporting goods store, and will give you the quality you are seeking for rafting in calm, smooth waters. They are not recommended for whitewater or open sea rafting.

    Inflatable Fishing Raft

    • If you will be using your inflatable raft for fishing, you may wish to purchase a model that features a wooded, slatted floor which allows you to stand when casting out or reeling in your fishing line. You may also want to look for a raft that can have a motor mounted on it if you wish to motorize your raft at some point in the future.

    Setup Time and Capacity

    • When shopping for an inflatable raft, you will want to check the setup time for the raft. Fifteen minutes to fill with a manual pump is reasonable. Also, you need to consider the capacity of your raft. If you'll be inviting friends and family to come along, consider a 3-person or larger raft.
