Types of Inflatable Rafts

Inflatable rafts offer the convenience of portable watercraft that can handle all types of waters. They feature a round or oval shape that is formed by a large inflatable chamber and have an attached floor. Buyers should choose a type based in their desired use and body of water they want to traverse.
  1. Swimming Rafts

    • Swimming rafts are a small lightweight raft designed for use in swimming pools or lounging in a lake. Constructed from a thin vinyl or PVC, they are susceptible to damage from contact with any rocks or sharp objects. Models vary in size and shape with some including drink holders, oar holders and a tow loop. They can be inflated with a common sports ball air pump or by mouth.

    Survival Rafts

    • Survival rafts are kept aboard ocean vessels in case of an accident where the crew has to abandon ship. These sturdy rafts feature a heavy-duty rubber or PVC material that is reinforced along the bottom, seams and at the handles. The often include a roof along with an emergency kit that contains drinking water, flares, food rations and a first aid kit. Survival rafts feature a self-inflation system that utilizes compressed air or carbon dioxide to inflate the raft instantly.

    River Rafts

    • Inflatable river rafts, designed to navigate calm to rough rivers, feature a curved design to allow the front and back to roll over large waves and rocks easily. They are often larger rafts that accommodate four to 20 passengers and have several rows of seats within the center. River rafts have a durable PVC shell that will withstand the abrasion of rocks, gravel and sandy surfaces. They often have a rope threaded through eyelets that runs atop the outside of the raft for passengers to hold on to for safety.

    Boat Raft

    • Inflatable boats rafts are a modified raft design that allows for an outboard or trolling motor to be placed on the rear via a transom. Inflatable boat rafts usually contain a wood floor to support added weight and hold up to the high speeds. These boats come in a variety of sizes and models with varying amenities including inflatable seats, fixed folding chairs, storage containers and a driving console. Many inflatable boats are designed to be able to be broken down into pieces for easy transport and quickly reassembled.
