1
Cut down trees using an axe or a saw. Dead trees float better, but if you can't find any, cutting down live trees will work. You want them all to be fairly uniform in size. You'll need around ten larger ones -- 12 inches in diameter, 10-12 feet long -- and two smaller ones -- 3-4 inches in diameter, 7-8 feet long.

2
Line up the 10 larger logs. Cut dovetail-shaped notches about a foot from either end of each log. These notches will be narrower at the top and wider at the bottom, like a dove's tail. The widest part of each should be about two inches across. Slight variation is fine, but all your notches need to be fairly uniform. A wood file will help you even out and shape your notches.
-
3
Cut your two smaller logs into triangular shapes. They need to fit into your notches. Additional tools will make this task easier, if you have them. Otherwise, use your axe and wood file to accomplish this task.
-
4
Slide each of the smaller logs through the notches so that they are perpendicular to the larger logs.
-
5
Secure the smaller logs in place by weaving twine around both the smaller and larger logs in a criss-cross pattern.
