How do I Find Extra Long Shift Cables for a Recumbent Bike?

Some recumbent bikes have long wheelbases ranging in length from 65 to 71 inches. The long wheelbases provide a fast, stable, smooth and comfortable ride, but that same long wheelbase, which provides a nice ride, also makes finding a replacement extra-long shift cable difficult. Depending on the type of recumbent, a shift cable might even be longer than the wheelbase and like tandem bikes, require a cable that measures more than 100 inches in length. Many businesses sell extra long cable shifters.

Instructions

    • 1

Use an adjustable wrench to unbolt the old shift cable from the derailleur; this frees the cable.

    • 2

Pull the cable from its housing, which runs from the derailleur to the shifter.

    • 3

Measure the length of your shift cable. If it measures less than 100 inches, you'll use a tandem shift cable. If it's more than 100 inches, you'll need a triple bike shift cable.

Ask a nearby bike specialty store if they carry tandem or triple shift cables. If they don't, ask them if they can special order one next time they put an order in with their distributor. Most small specialty stores are more than happy to help you find your extra-long shift cable.
