The Advantages of Small Wheels on a Bicycle

Although most bicycles sold in the United States have wheels that are larger than 26 inches, a number of bicycle manufacturers make bikes with small wheels. Small wheels can range in size from 6 inches to 24 inches. Bicycles with smaller wheels have many advantages including quicker acceleration, reduced air drag, increased maneuverability, better traction, and greater efficiency, which can lead to a greater speed. Smaller wheels also are generally stronger than larger wheels.
  1. Small Wheels Are Faster

    • According to Olympic Men's Road Race Gold Medal winner Alexi Grewal, "Tests have shown that up to 16 mph, the small wheel is more efficient that a big wheel. Between 16 and 33 mph, there is little difference. Over 33 mph, the gyroscopic effect of the big wheel makes it more effective. Most folks do not go over 33 mph." The main reason for the ability to go faster with a small wheel is that the reduced surface area of the wheel and shorter spokes create less air drag, which slows you down.

Small Wheels Are Easier to Maneuver

    • Because you are closer to the ground on a bicycle with small wheels, and because the smaller wheels grab the road better, it is easier to maneuver your bicycle. Some people find that when they first ride a small-wheel bicycle, they over-steer and think the bike is a bit 'jumpy.' Once you adjust to the feel of the smaller wheel, you will find that it is easier to corner, easier to change directions and easier to draft because you can maneuver more quickly. Also, small-wheel tires have better traction because they have higher pressure per inch on the ground. This helps maneuverability, especially on tight corners and in wet conditions.

    Small Wheels Allow Better Fit

    • One other advantage of small wheels is that you can get a better fit bike, especially if you are shorter than average or have a shorter than average leg length. For women, an advantage is that there is a lower "step-through" height with smaller wheels. Additionally, small wheels allow you to adjust the wheelbase length to best fit the purpose of the bicycle. Some manufacturers of small-wheel bicycles, such as Bike Friday, create custom bikes. Those bikes are designed to fit your body size as well as your riding style.

Small Wheels Are Easier to Stow

    • One of the biggest advantages of small wheels is that it allows for manufacturing of folding or separable bikes, which can be taken apart or folded into small carrying cases. This is useful if you want to take your bike with you on a trip -- some bikes fold into a suitcase-size package which can be sent as regular luggage on airplane and trains, thereby avoiding the fee for oversize luggage. Also, with a small-wheel bicycle that folds or can be taken apart, you can easily put it into a car trunk.
