How to Track Stand on a Fixed Gear Bike

The track stand is a useful and impressive tool in a track cyclist's repertoire. The technique allows you to stand upright and nearly motionless without removing your feet from the pedals. The track stand is mostly used by fixed-gear bike racers on velodrome tracks, but with some practice, you can use the track stand on the road, as well.

Instructions

    • 1

Pedal easily with the track or road incline to your right. Slow down gradually, but do not come to a full stop.

    • 2

Continue to slow down. Just before your bike stops, turn the handlebars toward the incline. Do not bring the front wheel perpendicular to your bike; just keep it at a moderate angle.

    • 3

Apply just enough forward pressure to the pedals to keep the front wheel from rolling down the incline, but do not move the bike more than a few inches. If it begins to roll forward, take some pressure off of the pedals until it is balanced with the incline once again. Keep your adjustments small.

    • 4

As you grow more comfortable with Step 3, make your adjustments smaller until you can keep your bike upright with very little rocking motion.
