1
Go to a sporting goods store or bicycle store to choose a bike rack. Make sure to bring the car you will be predominately using with your rack. Ask a sales associate for help in choosing an appropriate rack for your car and bike. They will be able to recommend whether you should use a rack that goes on the back of your car or one that goes on top. Purchase the rack of your preference based on the ones recommended to you.

Have the sales associate show you how to properly secure your new bike rack to your car. The straps that attach the rack to your car should be labeled and easily identifiable. Some straps may be labeled upper and lower to indicate where they should connect to your car. You will also receive a manual with your new rack that provides instructions for attaching the rack. Once the associate has shown you how to put the rack on your car, take it off and do it yourself to make sure you are comfortable.

Ask the sales associate to show you how to secure your bike (or a store bike if you were unable to bring yours in your car) to the bike rack. Once it is mounted, make sure you are comfortable with how secure it is. Test the security by gently tugging on your bike and the straps to make sure nothing loosens easily. After you are satisfied, remove your bike and remount it yourself to make sure you are comfortable. Again, the manual will provide instructions for future reference.

When driving with your bike rack and bike mounted to your car, drive slowly and cautiously. Take extra care when going over speed bumps or bumpy roads.
