Static ropes are the opposite of dynamic ropes in that they are not designed to stretch. Dynamic ropes are used for climbing situations, whereas a static rope will be used mainly for rappelling and canyoning. Other uses for static ropes are rescuing, hauling gear or ascension. Static ropes should never be used for climbing. If you fell while using a static rope, your rope would not have any stretch. Therefore, you could cause yourself serious injury. On the other hand, you sometimes can use a dynamic rope in place of a static rope for hauling gear or rappelling.
Choosing a Static Rope

The biggest difference in static ropes is their diameters. Choose a diameter with which you are comfortable, but also be sure to find one that is compatible with your weight. Someone who weighs a bit more may want to consider purchasing a static rope that is at least 9 mm. A smaller person may be more comfortable with closer to an 8 mm line. Another consideration is your skill level. Someone who is just learning canyoning or repelling skills may consider choosing a thicker line simply because of the wear and tear they will put on the rope.
Functions of a Dry Rope

A "dry" rope has been treated to be resistant against water. Most rock climbers may not find it necessary to purchase a dynamic rope that has been dry treated, especially if they are only climbing in dry conditions. However, ropes do quickly absorb water. When a rope is wet, it weighs more and becomes more difficult to handle. Additionally, a wet rope can be extremely dangerous if you are climbing in freezing conditions. Purchasing a dry-treated rope can be a bit more expensive, but a treated rope tends to slide better and wear down less quickly.

Until recently, dry-treated static ropes were not really seen on the market. Dry treatments typically were used only on dynamic ropes. However, dry static ropes are available. This option is ideal for those who enjoy climbing in extreme conditions, as their static line can be water resistant and last longer during bad weather.
