Roller Rinks in the Chicago Area

Displeased with the original in-line roller skate design, James Leonard Plimpton invented the four-wheel skate--known as the quad skate--in 1863 and opened the first public roller skating rink in 1866. He is called "the father of modern roller skating," according to the National Museum of Roller Skating. Today, USA Roller Sports considers roller derby "to be the most rapidly growing sport," proving that skating is a popular pastime. Whether you prefer in-line or quad skates, roller skating is a fun activity for people of all ages and there are several roller rinks located in the Chicago area.
  1. The Rink

    • The Rink originally opened in 1975 and relocated to its current, larger facility in 1985. Smooth R&B Jams is every Sunday night from 5 to 9 p.m. for ages 30 and older; Wednesday is Family Skate from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. The big skate party is on Thursday nights with DJ Smooth spinning "Old School Style" from 8 p.m. to midnight for ages 27 and older. Skating instruction and party packages are also available.
