How to Install a Coin Axle in Heelys Skate Shoes

Roger Adams created the Heelys skate shoe in 2000. It is an athletic shoe that has a wheel in the heel and enables you to skate as if you were riding on a skateboard or wearing a pair of roller skates. The skate shoe allows you to shift from walking to skating by shifting your body weight, while wearing the same footwear. Heelys are easy to assemble and certain styles include easy-to-install coin axles. The coin axle, which allows the wheels to spin forward and backwards, has small slits on each end.

When disassembled, the coin axle separates into two pieces. Place one half of the axle in the center on one side of the wheel and the other half in the center of the wheel on the other side. Position the axles so that the slit is on the outside of the wheel and in the middle of the wheel bearings.

Align the two parts of the coin axle together in the center. Twist, or screw, each end of the axle clockwise until you feel tension.

Tighten the axle using two quarters or a small flat-head screwdriver to make sure it is securely in place. Insert the quarters or screwdriver in the two slits on each side of the axles. Spin the wheel to test it. If the wheels appear to wobble, unscrew the axle by twisting it counterclockwise on each end and repeat all three steps until you correctly have it in place.

If the wheel spins properly, just snap it back into the shoe.
