Miami is known across the globe for its vibrant nightlife, beautiful beaches and Latin flavor. Florida's second largest city, however, is also among the nation's top places to go rollerblading. Whether you're a rollerblading family seeking a kid-friendly environment, a trendy single looking to meet new people or a fitness buff desiring a strenuous workout, metropolitan Miami offers several picturesque locales to go "blading."

  1. Crandon Park Beach

    • Crandon Park Beach is a family-friendly outdoor space that offers a reprieve from Miami's crowded and trendier rollerblading options. The three-mile beach is nestled in the heart of Key Biscayne, and its paved beachfront path is lined by a sea wall that overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and palm trees. The park also offers several attractions for children, including a carousel, fountains with water-spewing sea horses, an outdoor skating rink, picnic tables and volleyball courts. Additional attractions include a concession stand, a low-impact surf beach, cabana rentals, a tennis center and golfing.

    Hollywood Beach

    • Hollywood Beach is another rollerblading option approximately 20 minutes north of downtown Miami. The beach is situated between the cities of Miami and Fort Lauderdale and it offers a laidback atmosphere for families. The 2.2-mile paved beachfront path is a sun-kissed area that is popular draw for rollerbladers, bikers, walkers and runners. The Hollywood Beach Boardwalk is adjacent to the path, and it is home to restaurants, cafés, ice cream parlors, family-owned motels and the Hollywood Beach Theater -- Bandshell, which hosts live music performances throughout the year.

    Lummus Park Beach

    • Lummas Park Beach is among South Florida's busiest places to go rollerblading. The beach rose to international prominence after being featured in fashion photo shoots and the classic "Miami Vice" television series. Lummus Park Beach's paved beachfront path runs for several miles and can be a bit of a pedestrian obstacle course during daytime hours. However, its white-sandy beach, proximity to Ocean Drive, Atlantic Ocean views and the beautiful crowds that congregate there make it a top place to meet people while rollerblading along the path. Additional highlights include a topless sunbathing area, cabana and beach chair rentals, Art Deco sidewalks, volleyball courts, and access to a range of hotels and restaurants.

    Rickenbacker Causeway

    • The Rickenbacker Causeway offers hill workouts for rollerbladers desiring a challenge. The seven-mile bridge connects Key Biscayne with downtown Miami and has eight automobile traffic lanes and a paved pedestrian path. The Rickenbacker Causeway's paved path offers unobstructed views of the Miami and Brickell Key skylines, the Rickenbacker Marina and Biscayne Bay, while providing access to Miami Marine Stadium and Miami Seaquarium. At 78-feet, the William Powell Bridge is the highest point on the causeway. Therefore, the path is recommended for intermediate and expert rollerbladers seeking a demanding, long-distance workout. The Rickenbacker Causeway is a toll road, so remember to bring cash if you are planning to drive across the bridge.
