What Color Light Would You Expect to See on a Green Buoy?
-
Significance
-
Green buoys mark the starboard (right) side of a shallow channel to help boaters stay clear of shore, rocks or other obstructions as they leave the channel. Red buoys mark the port (left) side of the channel.
Lighting Benefits
-
Boaters cannot differentiate between green and red buoys at night, so lights in corresponding colors are placed on top of the buoys. A boater who sees a green light knows that there is a green buoy underneath, and therefore knows where his starboard boundary is as he approaches the sea.
Considerations
-
Although the channel-marking buoy system is used worldwide, European ports mark their channels from a seaward approach, as opposed to the United States' landward approach, meaning that the red buoys and red lights are on the starboard side while the green buoys and green lights are on the port side as a boat approaches the sea.
