Virgin Island Bareboat Charters

The Virgin Islands stretch across the Caribbean from east of the Dominican Republic to just north of South America. Three of the Virgin Islands under U.S. control, St. Thomas, St. Croix, and St. John, are the most popular of all the Caribbean Islands. The Virgin Islands are a popular tourist destination for diving and sailing, and there are a number of companies that offer bareboat charters, where the company rents only the boats, to qualified sailors. Passports are not required for US citizen traveling to the US Islands, but are needed to visit the British Islands.

    • Horizon Yacht Charters, located on the British Virgin Island of Tortola, a short jaunt by boat from St Thomas, offers over two dozen fully equipped, 31 to 54 foot, sailboats for charter. Located in Nanny Cay Marina, there are hotels, restaurants, swimming pools and shops nearby. Horizon offers a discount card program, included with your rental, for goods and services with local dive shops, spas, restaurants and more. The company asks for a "sailing resume" to determine your experience level. For those without adequate sailing experience Horizon offers American Sailing Association classes and instructors. They also provide a list of experienced skippers who will sail the boat for you, for an additional fee.

    CYOA Charters

    • CYOA Charters rents fully self-contained mono-hull, catamaran and tri-hull sailboats, as well as motor yachts to qualified captains. CYOA has over a dozen boats up to 50 feet in length. Renters must have boating experience for the type and class boat they wish to charter. An application form is available on their website and professional captains are available for the inexperienced. CYOA Charters will help you plan your excursions with suggestions for the best ports, anchorages, beaches, dive locations and restaurants. CYOA does not rent boats during the high hurricane season months of September and October.

    Island Yachts

    • Family owned and operated, Island Yachts is a smaller charter company that has been renting bareboat charters to experienced sailors for over 30 years. Island Yachts has a fleet of nine boats ranging from 35 to 50 foot lengths. Based out of Red Hook, St. Thomas, Island Yacht's dock is close to both the U.S. Island of St. John and British Island of Tortola. Numerous services adjacent to the dock include grocery stores, restaurants, banks, a pharmacy and medical clinic. Island Yachts was presented with the National Environmental Quality Award by the U.S. EPA in 2010 in recognition of having solar power panels installed on all their vessels. Island Yachts offers a three extra free days with a weeks rental from April to December.
