Difference Between Neoprene & Nylon Life Vests

Most life vests are made of either nylon or neoprene. While they do not differ significantly in the safety they provide, differences exist between the two in terms of comfort, cost and warmth. Whichever life vest you choose, its labeling should indicate the vest is approved by the U.S. Coast Guard.
  1. Comfort

    • Neoprene life vests are much more comfortable than nylon vests because they are soft. Nylon vests can be scratchy. Neoprene life vests also fit more snugly around the body, becoming looser due to expansion when they come in contact with water. As a result, they offer greater freedom of movement.

    Cost

    • Nylon life vests tend to be less expensive than neoprene vests. The difference in cost does not mean, however, a difference in safety. Nylon life vests are just as safe as neoprene life vests.

    Warmth

    • Neoprene life vests retain the wearer's body heat, while nylon life vests allow body heat to escape. Neoprene life vests, thus, are much warmer, which can be a crucial factor in cold water.
