What Are SCUBA Tanks Made Of?

Scuba tanks are an essential part of the dive experience. Personal preference and diving requirements dictate which scuba tank to select. Knowing the characteristics of the types of tanks helps to make the right selection.
  1. Facts

    • Scuba tanks are also known as scuba cylinders. They hold breathing gas that is delivered to the diver through a regulator, thereby extending the time that can be spent underwater.

    Types

    • The most common types of scuba tanks are made from aluminum or steel. Composite tanks, sometimes referred to hoop wrap, also are available.

    Features

    • Aluminum scuba tanks are the least expensive, but they are prone to dents. Steel tanks are more expensive than aluminum, but they are more durable. Composite tanks are the most expensive, but they tend to have a longer serviceable life.

    Considerations

    • Tank size, weight, buoyancy, air capacity and price vary among the three types of scuba tanks. Divers should consider their budget, personal use and comfort before purchasing a scuba tank.

    Safety

    • All scuba tanks are required to be inspected annually for corrosion or other damage. A hydrostatic test (ability to hold pressurized gas) is required every five years.
