How to Build Your Own Hookah Diving System

Diving with a hookah diving system can be a great alternative to using a traditional scuba setup. Hookah systems allow the diver to move about in a limited area without the burden of an air tank strapped to his back. Hookah systems also provide a limitless air supply less expensively than scuba diving gear. An experienced diver can make a hookah diving system with the right tools and serious attention to safety precautions.

      Gather all components of your hookah diving system in a large, flat area. Line them up in the order that you will be assembling them: compressor with motor or engine, short air hose length, reserve tank, longer food grade air hose, harness, and regulator. Be sure any tools and extra metal fittings you may need are within easy reach.

      Ensure that each part is clean and whole. Broken pieces should be replaced without question, and dirty pieces need to be cleaned thoroughly with fresh water.

      Attach the shorter accessory hookah air hose to the compressor output. It is important that the hose is compatible with the compressor type you use; compressors made for higher pressure may require a heat resistant steam hose.

      Affix the input end of the air reserve tank to the other end of the short air hose. Reserve tanks hold enough air to give the diver time to resurface, should the air compressor fail. If you plan to use the hookah diving system for more than one diver at a time, you will need to arrange two or more air assemblies at this point, along with hoses, a harness and regulator for each diver.

      Attach the longer length of food grade air hose from the air reserve tank output to the harness. The purpose of the harness -- and attaching the hose at the back of the harness -- is to keep the hose out of the diver's way and to keep the air moving in the correct direction.

      Affix the regulator to the harness and air hose arrangement. The air will flow directly into the diver's mouth from the mouth piece on the regulator.

      Ensure that each component of the hookah diving system is properly affixed before preparing to dive. When the system is in use, the compressor should sit in a surface floatation device made specifically for hookah diving systems.
