1
Establish your long-term goals. Do you just want to be a casual weekend diver or do you want to become a professional? The certification processes for either path are similar, with the difference being the number of certifications required by commercial divers. It's also a longer training cycle to become a commercial deep sea diver.

2
Train! Whether you go to a diving academy or to your local diving shop, you're going to need to learn the proper skills required to become a proficient deep sea diver. Basic training can typically be accomplished in one or two sessions, and basic certification is usually offered wherever training is provided.

3
Buy equipment. Scuba gear can be expensive when you first buy it all, but with care it can last for years. The most expensive piece of equipment you could get for scuba diving is an air compressor. The air compressor is used to refill your air cylinder. However, you can always go get air from your local diving shop.

4
Learn secondary skills that could be useful when you look for work as a professional diver. For example, learning to weld or handle explosives can be incredibly valuable to companies that work with underwater construction or demolitions. Some scuba schools offer this instruction.
