      Purchase wheels measuring between 65 and 72 mm in diameter. This range allows for sliding and gripping while maneuvering on your longboard. The larger the wheel, the better it can handle large debris and cracks in the pavement. Smaller wheels in the 60 to 65 mm range are designed to accomplish cleaner turns but don't provide the same stability as the larger wheels.

      Purchase a wheel with a large contact patch, or overall width, such as a square edge wheel or a radiused edge. Both of these types of wheels provide a large area along the width of the wheel, which provides longer wear and more security over rough terrain on longboards.

      Purchase wheels with the correct density. Wheels come in a wide range of durometers, or levels of hardness, from 78a to 101a, with 78a being on the softer, more durable end of the scale. Generally, a 78a wheel is recommended for most longboards along with a 70 mm diameter. Softer wheels allow for better grip on rough surfaces, while harder wheels offer a longer life of use.
