How to Lift Your Skateboard Up From the Side

Skateboard tricks include the ollie, the kickflip and the the tic-tac. All of these tricks require dexterity, balance and a fair amount of practice to perform them successfully. The weight of your body and the placement of your feet on the skateboard create different effects from full turns to gaining speed. Lifting up the side of your skateboard requires a high level of comfort with standing and moving on a rolling skateboard -- and, in some cases, even leaving it with your feet to rejoin it at the end of a trick. The ollie grab trick includes popping the skateboard up into the air along with your feet and lifting the side of the skateboard in your hand before landing on the pavement again. This trick can be performed on standard, flat pavement or on a ramp.

Instructions

    • 1

Place your feet on your skateboard and push off. Place your back foot at the tail end of the skateboard. Place your forward foot about a third of the way back from the front tip of the skateboard. Bend your knees and crouch slightly forward as your skateboard builds speed.

    • 2

Place your weight on your back foot as you begin to lift your body into the ollie jump. Push quickly on the tail end of the skateboard so that the tip hits the pavement and “pops” off the ground, changing the direction of the skateboard in order for it to shoot up into the air.

    • 3

Pull your legs up with the skateboard immediately as you finish popping the tip on the pavement. Allow the skateboard and your legs to move simultaneously so that the skateboard remains in contact with the soles of your feet.

    • 4

Place your left hand on the side of the skateboard as it launches into the air and as your legs curl into your abdomen. Lift up on the side of the board slightly with your left hand to create a slight tilt moving your feet in tandem with the tilted board. Grab the side of the the skateboard directly after you leave the ground because the ollie will only last a couple of seconds.

    • 5

Release your left hand from the side of the skateboard as the board begins to angle towards the pavement, and straighten out the board and your feet. Keep your weight on your back foot and allow the board to land on the rear wheels. Readjust your weight to bring down the front wheels along with your forward foot. Straighten your legs and stand straight to finish the trick.
