1
Determine your riding style, which will help you control the skateboard. A regular stance is when your left foot is planted at the nose of the board and your right is at the tail. A goofy stance is opposite, with your right foot forward and your left foot at the tail.
-
2
Place both feet on the skateboard. Plant your forward foot on the truck bolts at the nose. Plant your back foot near the bolts at the tail. Your back foot should rest slightly behind the bolts on the tail.
-
3
Align your body with the board so that the midpoint of your chest is situated midway of the board. Slightly bend your knees and hold your hands out away from your body, instead of resting them at your side.
-
4
Practice shifting your body weight from your front foot to the rear foot. Move your rear foot from the board to the ground and back again to the board until you can perform this movement smoothly without losing your balance.
-
5
Anchor your front foot at the nose of the board. Keep your anchor foot slightly bent. Move your rear foot from the board to the ground in a sweeping motion. Push off the ground with your rear foot as you perform a sweep.
-
6
Return your rear foot to the skateboard. Place your foot near the rear bolts. Lean forward slightly and hold your arms out to retain your balance. Sweep your foot along the ground when you are ready for another stride.
