How to Build Sledding Jumps

Make seemingly endless snowy winter days more entertaining with a backyard sledding jump that you build yourself. Even if you live in a relatively flat area, you can construct a sledding ramp with a jump at the end in a short amount of time. A well-built ramp can last all winter long, creating the perfect excuse to get outdoors. Create a jump that is as mild or extreme as you are, and make this winter a memorable one.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a jump location that is free from trees, rocks or items that you could easily crash into when sledding.

    • 2

Stack several wooden boards in the snow, forming two rows, to create sides for your snow jump. Set a picnic table or other piece of lawn furniture between the sides in areas with deep snow to use as a ramp base.

    • 3

Shovel snow into a large pile between the rows of boards. Pause every few minutes to pack the snow in tight and to reinforce the side boards. Build the snow mound as high as you desire.

    • 4

Pile the snow high on one end, leading down to a flatter area. Pile the snow into an upward slope of approximately 30 degrees at the end of the flat area, leading to the jump. Roll large snowballs and cut them in half to form the jump.

    • 5

Smooth out the top of the ramp with a board or sled. Sprinkle the jump with salt or an ice melt product to harden the snow.
