Winter Snow Ski Resorts in North Carolina

North Carolina, located in the southeastern United States, provides opportunities for winter skiing activities in the Blue Ridge and Great Smoky Mountains. Both of these mountain ranges are located in the western part of the state. Most of the ski resorts in North Carolina also permit snowboarding, night skiing and snow-tubing activities.     Sugar Mountain Resort

    • Situated in the Great Smoky Mountain, the Sugar Mountain Resort is less than five miles from the town of Banner Elk and recreational opportunities in Pisgah National Forest. Sugar Mountain has 20 skiing and snowboarding trails, as well as eight lifts. Hours of operation during the ski season, which typically lasts from November through March, are 9:00 a.m. through 10 p.m. Night skiing and snow-tubing activities are allowed. The resort's staff offers lessons for skiing and snowboarding. Annual events, such as Oktoberfest, are held at Sugar Mountain Resort throughout the year.     Sapphire Valley Ski Area

    • The Sapphire Valley Ski Area in the Nantahala National Forest provides skiing and snowboarding opportunities on the 5,700-foot Sapphire Mountain in the Great Smokies. The eight-acre resort offers two trails, one each for beginning and intermediate skiers, and three lifts. The season at Sapphire Valley usually runs from December through March, depending on the amount of snowfall. Night skiing is permitted since the hours of operation lasts from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Sapphire Ski Valley Area also features a recreation center that has a game room, exercise center, indoor swimming pool and whirlpool tub. Lodging can be found at Foxhunt at Sapphire Valley, which offers condo-style units with living rooms and fully furnished kitchens.
