Types of Toboggan

When purchasing a toboggan it is important to study the types and figure out which works best for the buyer. From saucers to plastic toboggans to traditional sleds, even to dog sleds, there are many different designs and functions of today's toboggans.
  1. Saucers

    • A saucer sled is a round toboggan, usually made of plastic. They are inexpensive and usually marketed toward children. Saucers are very lightweight and make it easy for children to slide down almost any hill.

    Plastic Toboggans

    • Plastic toboggans are usually a rectangular sheet of flexible plastic. These are sometimes referred to as Magic Carpet toboggans. These toboggans are lightweight and easy for children to carry. They slide quickly downhill, making for a fun experience for kids.

    Traditional Sleds

    • Traditional sleds are usually made of wood, although some plastic forms are available. These toboggans sometimes have a rectangular bottom for seating and a high back. Other forms of traditional sleds are one long wooden body with a front that curls up. These toboggans work well for downhill coasting.

    Luges

    • A luge is a small toboggan one which the rider lays down flat. Steering of these sleds is accomplished by shifting body weight or using the feet. Luges are popular in Europe and also used in the Olympics. These are for use by adults and older children.

    Dog Toboggans

    • Dog sleds are wooden sleds that are pulled by sled dogs. The dogs that pull these are long haired dogs, such as huskies, that can withstand harsh winter weather. These sleds are commonly used for racing, carrying supplies and travelling.
