How to Make Sleds From Skis

One of the best ways to enjoy a winter snowfall is spending the day sledding. Many sleds are cheaply made and designed, however, and generally don't hold up for more than a season. If you have a pair of old or used skis, making them into a sled is a great way to give them a second life while at the same time making a sled that will last. And also a sled that will travel fast!

  • 2.5-inch wood screws
  • Piece of plywood, 16" x 3'
  • Stain or paint

Instructions

  1. Building the Sled

    • 1

Chop off the end of the skis until the total length of each ski is 4 feet. Make sure to file or sand down the fresh ends of the skis until they feel smooth to the touch.

    • 2

Mark the center of the underside of the skis with two marks 1 inch apart at 10-inch intervals. Marks should be approximately at the following inch markers: 8, 9, 20, 21, 30, 31, 39 and 40 inches.

    • 3

Drill a small hole at each of the marks to enable you to put screws into the skis later without cracking or otherwise damaging them.

    • 4

      Slice the 2 x 4 into 3-foot pieces.

    • 5

Put a ski upside down on each 2 x 4. Center the ski so there is a 6-inch overlap on each end of the 2 x 4. Fasten the 2 x 4 to the ski using the pre-drilled holes, drill and 2.5-inch wood screws.

    • 6

Flip the skis over and screw the 3-foot piece of plywood to the 2 x 4s using the 2-inch screws, leaving a 1-inch overlap on each side.

    Putting on the Finishing Touches

    • 7

Paint the wood parts of the sled with water-resistant stain or paint.

    • 8

Drill a hole in the center of the front plywood piece, to add a line for pulling or towing the sled. Thread through some strong thread, such as clothesline.

    • 9

Attach drawer or door handles to the sides of the sled, to make handles to hold onto for safety.
