About Snorkeling in California
-
Geography
-
One of California's most popular snorkeling destinations is the Channel Islands National Marine Park. The islands that make up this park are located off the southern coast of California from Point Conception to north of Los Angeles. Though most of the islands are rather uninhabited, Santa Catalina Island stands out as a location all it's own. The city of Avalon on Santa Catalina provides several locations and resources for snorkelers. The third notable spot is Santa Barbara Island, a tiny island located 38 miles off the coast of San Pedro. The last location covered here is La Jolla Cove in San Diego.
Types
-
Each location mentioned above provides a unique snorkeling experience. Experienced snorkelers will want to visit the Channel Islands, specifically Anacapa and eastern Santa Cruz. These locations are very isolated so visitors will need to come prepared with food and supplies for the day. The waters can also be tricky, and are best left to seasoned snorkelers. Less experienced snorkelers will enjoy Lover's Cove and Casino Dive Park in Avalon. Nature lovers will want to visit Santa Barbara Island for the unique plants and wildlife. Beginners should check out La Jolla Cove, where they can participate in guided tours.
Features
-
Anacapa and eastern Santa Cruz offer kelp forests and rocky reefs. Snorkelers in Lover's Cove will find garibaldis, calico bass, and senorita fish. Casino Dive Park features kelp forests and four ships, purposely sunken to provide marine habitats. Santa Barbara Island is a resting and breeding area for sea lions. Also found in this area are sea stars, garibaldi, and sea urchins. La Jolla Cove features sheephead, lobster, rays, perch, crabs and starfish. You may also spot sea lions, seals, dolphins, and leopard sharks here.
Benefits
-
The coast of California offers some exceptionally clear waters and a wide variety of marine life. When choosing your specific destination, consider the needs of everyone in your party. If you need to have dive shops and restaurants nearby, don't head to the remote areas of the Channel Islands. La Jolla Cove is a great destination if you would also like to explore San Diego on your vacation.
