How to Snorkel in the Ocean

In the ocean, snorkelers can explore coral reefs and other sea life. The ocean, however, can be a hazardous environment. Tidal waves can push snorkelers into reefs and rocks, which can cause injury. It is best to practice snorkeling in a pool before heading into the ocean. In addition to waves, you must be watchful of sea life. Seemingly mundane ocean creatures such as sea turtles and sting rays can cause serious injury. When snorkeling, it is important to keep your hands to yourself and simply enjoy the sights.

Instructions

    • 1

Inform someone on land that you are going snorkeling, and where you plan to snorkel. This is essential in case there is an incident and you don't return as planned.

    • 2

Find a partner to snorkel with. You and your partner should stay together while snorkeling and keep an eye on each other in the water.

    • 3

Drink plenty of water, but don't eat any food or drink alcohol 45 minutes before you plan to snorkel.

    • 4

Identify an area of the ocean that is calm with no wave action. Waves are strong enough to slam you into hard objects or carry you away.

    • 5

Put on your wet suit if snorkeling in cool water.

    • 6

Spit into your mask to defog it. Rub the spit around the mask lenses with your fingers. Then rinse the mask in the water and dry it out with a towel.

    • 7

Place the mask over your face. Make sure it fits snug around your eyes and nose. Pull on the back of the straps to make sure it is secure, and that the straps fit comfortably above your ears.

    • 8

Secure the snorkel to the side of the mask with the included plastic clip.

    • 9

Try on the mask and snorkel together. Make sure the mouthpiece can be comfortably inserted into your mouth.

    • 10

Fold the heel of the fin inside out and slip your foot into the pocket. The fins shouldn't be to loose.

    • 11

Walk backwards from the beach into the ocean until you are waist deep. Then bend over and face forward until your mask is submerged and practice breathing through the snorkel. If on a boat, crawl down into the water with the boat ladder. Then bend down to submerge your head while holding until the ladder and practice breathing with the snorkel.

    • 12

Tighten the straps on your mask, if too much water is seeping into your mask.

    • 13

Swim into the ocean after you are breathing comfortably.

    • 14

Paddle your feet gently in the water. Snorkel with your partner and be aware of the waves and ocean currents. If you start to feel the current pushing you, get out of the water unless you are strong enough to fight against the current.
