How to Dive for Crayfish

Crayfish hunting requires an incredible amount of patience and persistence. Due to the cray's habit of hiding in rocky crevices and near kelp, finding a crayfish can take a very long time. Using landmarks assist in not searching in the same place twice. The key, particularly for new divers, is to not give up too quickly. Catching a giant crayfish can be quite satisfying.

Instructions

    • 1

Put your gear on. The wetsuit keeps you warm, while the weight belt assists when you dive. It's easier to put on the mask, snorkel and fins once you're in the water or about to jump in.

    • 2

Find a spot with a lot of kelp.

    • 3

Snorkel at the surface of the water until you're ready to dive. Dive down and use the kelp strands to pull you down.

    • 4

Search carefully and take your time. Crayfish like to hide in rocky areas and you'll likely see their feelers sticking out.

    • 5

Move fast when you find one. Crayfish are extremely fast. Grab their back, not their limbs. You can grab their belly, but this isn't the easiest or most comfortable technique

    • 6

Swim through a gap of kelp as you come to the surface, once you have the crayfish.
