How to Swim with Dolphins for Kids
-
Educate
-
Find out if your child's dolphin swim facility has an educational component built into the program. Some encounters start off in a classroom setting so the child can learn about the magnificent mammals before they are distracted by the water and animals themselves. If your location does not offer this, take time at home before your dolphin encounter to research dolphin habitats, training regime and personalities so your child is more comfortable, confident and knowledgeable about the creatures.
Meet Prerequisites
-
Different facilities have different requirements as far as age and height of children. Some places offer encounters for children as young as five, while other locations require children to be eight years old. Check in advance before you make any promises to your child to avoid heartbreak.
Be Cautious
-
Although some facilities offer dolphin swims in the open ocean, family dolphin swims are most commonly in contained environments with captive dolphins. It is important to remember that captive dolphins are not in their natural environment and no matter how much training they have, there is an element of unpredictability. Urge your child to be obedient to the instructor and gentle with the dolphin.
Be Realistic
-
Be mindful of your child's swimming experience. There are dolphin swims in deep water and dolphin encounters in water that is only waist-high. Make sure your child is comfortable in the situation you choose. Do not push the dolphin swim if your child is reluctant or afraid.
