How to Compare Snorkel Sets

Though snorkeling sets come with very basic items --- a mask, snorkel and fins --- it is difficult to name the best for beginners. There are many features to choose from, such as semi-dry and dry snorkels, as well as snorkels that come with a purge valve. Length and width of the tubing can affect how easy snorkelers breathe, and water conditions may also play a role in equipment that you select.

      Try out the different options found at dive shops or other specialty stores in your area. The mask must offer sufficient sight views to let in as much light as possible. It should be easy to adjust and should offer a snug but not uncomfortable fit. If you can try out mouth pieces, do that as well, and make sure that you do not choose one that pulls at your mouth. The mouthpiece should remain in place without applying too much force.

      Determine if you need an open tube, semi-dry or dry snorkel. Dry snorkels allow little to no water to enter the tube, even if fully submerged. If snorkeling in rough waters, a dry snorkel is a must, although they are more expensive. Semi-dry snorkels use angles and vent to prevent most water from entering the tube, which will fill with water if submerged. Open tubes are the basic snorkels. Open-tube and semi-dry work best in calm conditions.

      Size the equipment. Fins are available in many different sizes and styles, and some sets offer shorter, yet wider, fins. This may work better if you expect to make short dives beneath the water's surface. Also consider the snorkel tubing length and width: Do not end up with a snorkel that is too long and narrow, which can make breathing difficult.

      Compare prices. A basic starter snorkel set with an open tube snorkel will run between $25 and $35. A dry snorkel set can cost anywhere between $55 and $65. If you plan on snorkeling more than just once or twice, the costs of buying your own set will pay off quickly. Depending on location, equipment rentals can run $40 a session.
