Why Do Snowmobile Helmets Fog Up?

Snowmobile helmets have a tendency to fog up while driving primarily due to an imbalance of temperature between the chilly weather outdoors and the near-body temperature environment inside the mask.
  1. Air Flow

    • An imbalance of temperature between the inside of your mask and the cold weather outside is one of the main causes of fogging. Most snowmobile helmets include vents at the sides and top of the mask, opening these vents will aid in preventing fog.

    Breathing

    • The heat of the driver's breath inside the mask reacting with the cold air on the outside will also lead to fogging. Most quality snowmobile masks include an adjustable mouth vent to remedy this problem.

    Prevention

    • Many snowmobile retailers will carry an anti-fog spray or polish that can be applied as needed to the interior of the shield. Also, consider purchasing a heated shield, which includes a heating element in the plastic that eliminates fog.
