How to Replace the Ski Loops on a 2009 Ski-Doo MX Z

The ski loops on the 2009 Bombardier Ski-Doo MX Z are fastened to its body using two-piece blind rivets. The center of the rivet is a hollow tube occupied by a mandrel. When the mandrel is pulled out of the rivet by a special tool, the bulbous foot of the mandrel pulls the end of the rivet toward the top. When the rivet is fully seated, the mandrel pops off even with the top of the rivet.

Instructions

  1. Removing the Ski Loop

    • 1

Insert a bit the diameter of the center of the rivet – the stump of the blind rivet’s mandrel -- into a drill.

    • 2

Drill out the center of the rivet.

    • 3

Remove the pieces of the rivet and lift the ski loop away from the vehicle.

    Replacing the Ski Loop

    • 4

Install the drill bit in the drill. Select a drill bit that is the size of the blind rivet's sleeve -- the tubular element of the rivet.

    • 5

Mark the location on the body of the vehicle where you wish to install the ski loops, unless you are returning them to their original location. Drill a hole at the new location if a hole is required.

    • 6

Insert the blunt end of the blind rivet through the grommet in the ski loop. Insert the blunt end of the rivet into the hole. Push the rivet as close to the body of the vehicle as possible.

    • 7

Fit the opening at the end of the barrel of the rivet tool over the pointed mandrel of the blind rivet. Squeeze the handle of the handle of the rivet gun until you hear a loud snap, the sound of the excess part of the mandrel popping off the rivet.

    • 8

Tug the ski loop to ensure it is secure.
