How to Build a Hitch for a Ski-Doo Snowmobile

Putting a snap or quick-release hitch on a Ski-Doo snowmobile allows it to be towed on snow-covered ground. The hitch can be snapped onto a four-wheeler or hitched to the bumper of a pickup. This type of hitch is not used to transport the snowmobile over pavement, that is the purpose of a wheeled trailer. However, for short distances, emergencies and unintended fueling, the quick-release hitch is handy. Make a bumper-mounted pindle hitch from welded steel plate and a large snap-on carabiner hook.

Instructions

    • 1

Mark out a 3-inch piece of 3/8-by-3-inch steel angle, using a tape measure and T-square.

    • 2

Place the steel angle in a heavy steel vise and cut the 3-inch piece with a power hacksaw. Use a heavy steel file to smooth off the edges.

    • 3

Measure, mark and drill two 3/8-inch holes 1 inch apart and 3/4 inch from the edge of one flange on the angle. Repeat the process on the other end of the same flange.

    • 4

Lay the small end of a 4-inch snap hook carabiner inside the flanges on the 3-inch angle, touching both flanges and at a right angle to them. Weld both sides of the carabiner to the bottom flange and the end of the carabiner to the other flange.

Place the assembly so you can mark drill holes in the back bumper on the Ski-Doo. Drill the holes. Mount the pindle hitch to the Ski-Doo with four 3/8-by-1-inch machine bolts.
