How to Restring Old Snow Shoes

Snowshoes are used for traversing snow-pack, typically on long treks in the back country or in Arctic areas. The snowshoe disperses the body's weight over a larger area, which keeps the walker from sinking. Since the snowshoes are constantly getting wet and dirty, they need restringing from time to time. It's a fairly easy process.

Instructions

Soak the strings in warm water for an hour. This helps to treat and prep the strings for lacing.

    • 2

Stretch the strings out. Pull from both sides until taut. Set them aside to dry for a few hours.

    • 3

Lace across the width of the snowshoe, starting from the heel and working up to the toe. Depending on the model of snowshoe you have, you'll either lace through grommets or hooks. Pull taut at each grommet or hook and run the string back across to the next grommet or hook. Repeat till you reach the toe, then tie the string off and cut the excess away.

Lace the vertical strings starting from the toe and working down to the heel. Perform the same lacing process as in step 3 until it's complete.
