How to Hold a Surfboard

Hold a surfboard comfortably as you prepare to catch ocean waves. Different types of surfboards include longboards, shortboards and funboards. Experience and personal preference should dictate which surfboard is suitable for you. Before you start catching waves, you need to take the board to the water, which requires holding and carrying the board. There are numerous ways of holding a surfboard, and the appropriate method may depend on your board's length, weight and the situation at hand.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the center of the surfboard on your side next to your hip. Let the board rest on the top of your hip while your hand is holding the side of the board perpendicular to the ground.

    • 2

Carry the surfboard on your head using both arms. Position the board so that the face is upwards and the nose is facing downwards. Balance the center of the board while allowing it to rest flat on the top of your head.

    • 3

Hold the surfboard with another person by each carrying the ends. This method is useful for carrying more than one board.

    • 4

Allow the board to stand upright and find a spot on it to hold on to. The spot may depend on the height of the board and your stance. This method is useful when you are at a standstill and need to hold the board without carrying all its weight.
