1
Take out the fins, if any. Rest the surfboard on a work table or any stable holding area so that the topside faces you.
-
2
Start with a Waxy Wax bar of white base coat. Match the appropriate wax grade for the water temperatures you are surfing in. Way Wax comes in grades of tropical (75 degrees Fahrenheit and above), warm (64 to 74 degrees), cool (58 to 68 degrees) and cold (60 degrees and below).
-
3
Apply a thin layer of basecoat by making tiny circular strokes with firm pressure. Rub the wax lengthwise, and then crosswise, or tip to tail, and then rail to rail. This crosshatching allows the Waxy Wax to form small, sticky bumps. Do not apply too much pressure because this may cause damage.

4
Grab a bar of Waxy Wax in your chosen color and wax grade for the topcoat. Waxy Wax comes in many shades including yellow, orange, red, pink, fuchsia, black, green, emerald, blue, light blue and violet. You can design image patterns using different wax colors like rainbow, checkboard, stripes, flower, flags or anything you like.

5
Rub the wax on the surface of your board. Cover approximately 3/4 of the board by starting on the area where you will place your feet, then waxing an additional 10 to12 inches so you can move your feet around. Novice surfers can cover the entire area from tip to tail and rail to rail, for extra grip.
-
6
Wax near the rails where you will be grabbing the board for pop-ups, rolls and dives.
