How to Size Surf Booties

One lucky pet duck in San Diego, California, is thankful for the invention of surf booties. Duckie was fitted for a purple pair to protect its feet from the hot sand during beach walks with its owner, reports the "Global Times." Surfers, on the other hand, wear booties to keep their feet warm, particularly when the water temperature drops below 60 degrees F. Some surfers like to wear booties even in warmer temperatures, while others don't wear them at all, believing they get a better grip on the board without them.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to your local surf shop, and ask for their help in fitting a booty. Try on different sizes and thicknesses. The booties must be snug enough to keep out water, but not so tight that they're uncomfortable.

    • 2

Stand on a board in the booties, while trying them on at the shop. Rock back and forth on your feet, to see if you still have a feel for the surface of the board. If not, the boots may be too thick. Sacrifice greater warmth for more control.

Try on the different styles of booties. Some surfers find the split toe design allows more control of the board than the round toe. The split toe just means your big toe is in a separate compartment than the others.

Practice with the booties after you purchase them. If they are uncomfortable or water leeches into the boots, return them to the store, because they are not the right size for you.
