How to Clean a Longboard After Getting It Wet

Cleaning your surfboard regularly makes the difference between standing on a smooth versus gritty surface. Boards get dirty from a combination of sand and old wax that sticks together, creating a coarse texture under your feet. While wax offers traction when surfing, it can take a long time to scrape off, particularly when cleaning longboards, which typically range between 8 and 14 feet in length. Speed up the maintenance process of your board to spend more time in the water and less time landlubbing with your board scraper.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a tarp or drop cloth on the ground in the sun to prevent wax and sand from getting on surfaces. Prop your longboard sideways and low to the ground against a bench and on top of the tarp, facing the sun.

    • 2

Heat a pot of water on the stove until it begins to boil. Pour the hot water over your longboard to melt the wax and to flush sand off it. Heat more water, as needed, to cover your board.

    • 3

Wait about five minutes to allow the wax to drip off the board. Wipe your board down with a clean towel or scrape remaining wax off with a board scraper. Turn the board so that the opposite side is facing the sun. Repeat the cleaning and wiping process.
