DIY: Surfboard Rack for a Longboard

Avoid clutter and damage to your surfboards by constructing a do-it-yourself storage rack. Instead of leaning the boards to your wall or laying them down on the floor, a rack keeps them clean, organized and secure when not in use. A longboard is a type of surfboard that typically ranges from 8 to 12 feet in length and at least 2 1/2 inches thick and 20 inches in width. Before you construct a rack, make sure the walls are tall enough to accommodate the height of your longboards.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a pencil and tape measure to measure and mark the length of the rack. This depends on how many longboards you want to store. For storing three longboards, you need a 40-inch back piece stud. Make four marks at 8-inch intervals of the stud. Use the hand saw to cut the wood to your desired length.

    • 2

Set your hand saw to a 30 degree angle and cut a 5-inch piece from the excess piece of stud.

    • 3

Use the 30-degree-angle wood piece as a guide, and drill holes on the 8-inch marks of the back piece stud. This will make angled board support bars.

    • 4

Cut four pieces of 17-1/2-inch dowels and fit into the rack's drilled holes. The dowels serve as your longboard back supports. Make sure they are all the same length. Make any measurement adjustments as necessary.

    • 5

Pour wood glue into the holes. Place all the dowels in by twisting as you insert them into the glued holes. Allow the glue to dry completely.

    • 6

Put the hollow foam covers though the dowels. Cut to fit as necessary. The foam covers protect the surface of your longboard.

    • 7

Screw the rack on your wall horizontally, at a height about halfway the length of your longboards. The boards stack up vertically, saving space.
