How to Become a Stronger Surfer

Like many athletes, surfers sometimes hit a plateau that is difficult to push through to take them to the next level of competition. Sometimes it's a physical issue that holds them back, such as injury; a mental issue, such as a near-death experience; or even a meteorological issue, such as simply not getting good waves to surf. Although some issues are difficult to overcome, there are a number of steps someone can take to become a stronger surfer.

Instructions

    • 1

Develop a well-rounded fitness program designed to improve your surfing skills. Do a number of cardiovascular exercises such as running, bicycling and climbing stairs to increase your stamina. Exercise with free weights to strengthen your surfing muscles. Start with low weights and high repetitions, and then add more weight to your regimen slowly.

Hire a coach to help you find the weaknesses in your surfing and help you improve your skills. Have your coach watch you surf and listen to any advice or tips that he offers.

    • 3

Accept greater challenges out on the water. Seek out larger waves once you have learned how to surf the smaller breaks. Take the skills that you have learned to allow you to handle the bigger waves and faster speeds.

    • 4

Surf in different locations. Find surfing spots down the coast from where you normally surf and see how well your skills adapt to an unfamiliar break. Befriend someone who surfs in the new location regularly so they can tell you what to look for while on your board. Take a trip to one of the great surfing spots in the world, such as Hawaii or Australia, to inspire you and reinvigorate your passion for surfing.

Strengthen your surfing skills by making it a regular routine in your life, not a weekend hobby. Plan to surf as often as three or four times a week -- weather and surf conditions permitting.
