How to Wakeboard for Children

Water sports give children and adults alike the opportunity to spend time out on the water during the summer months. Wakeboarding often attracts a younger crowd, just as snowboarding does in the winter months. However, children require different equipment and a simpler approach to learning than adults who participate in the same activity. Because of these differences, children require more guidance and a more patient approach to learning how to wakeboard for the first time.

Instructions

    • 1

Start with the board parallel to the boat with the long side facing the boat. Remain calm and loose. Tensing up is one of the most common causes of falls.

    • 2

Sit in the water with knees bent and arms straight, holding the tow rope. As the boat moves, remain in a crouched position, as if you're a ball. Keep your knees bent and your elbows on the outsides of your knees.

    • 3

Watch the height of the water spray. When your swimsuit clears the water, stand up in a fluid motion as if you're standing up out of a chair. Keep your knees slightly bent and arms at waist level. Bend your arms slightly.

    • 4

Transfer your weight to your back heel if the board doesn't automatically turn to point toward the boat when you stand. The back foot should be your less prominent foot. This motion is similar to that of using your foot to squish a bug on the ground.
