1
Assess the damage to the tow rope in order to find the best method of repairing it. This should include where the rope is damaged, the material the rope is made of, the number of coils within the rope and how the rope is damaged. Once you know all of these factors, you can consider the repair possibilities.

2
Rinse the rope in fresh water and allow to dry completely by hanging in a shady place. This will remove any dirt, debris and water impurities from it, all of which can age and damage the rope. Once rinsed, you will also be able to see the damaged area more clearly.

3
Melt, if the rope is synthetic, the area around the damage to create a new strength and seal. This works best for areas that are not broken or frayed completely through and are not anywhere near the handle. Once the material has cooled, test the strength of the area. It is similar to welding metal for strength.

4
Take the rope, if fibrous, to a rope braider or other rope professional, for rebraiding of the frayed or damaged area. This is a good way to restrengthen the area that has been affected without damaging other areas around it.
