How to Hot Scrape Your Skis

After long periods of use, water skis and snow skis can accrue dirt and other impurities and need to be freshly waxed. Before you can put a fresh coat of wax on your skis, the base of the skis need to be completely cleaned. One way of doing this is to use a base cleaner, but the recommended method is hot scraping. Hot scraping is when you iron hot wax over the surface of a ski and then scrape it off while the wax is hot.

Heat up your iron. If it is steaming or smoking then it is too hot; turn it down.

Hold a bar of the ski wax against the hot iron. Holding it over the base of the ski, move the dripping wax around on the ski surface. Distribute the wax evenly over the surface. Iron the board just like you would iron clothes, keeping the iron moving constantly.

Scrape the wax off the ski while the wax is still hot. Hold the scraper with both hands, positioning the scraper's top away from you. Put your thumbs against the edge of the scraper and hold the scraper at a downward angle to get more leverage. Scrape away from you with long, powerful strokes. Keep scraping until you can't scrape off any more wax.
